as many of the folks who go to friendly house pickup know, the balls over there are in pretty lousy shape lately. we’ve asked them to get some new balls for us, and they’re “working on it”, but i had another idea:
looks like we can order decent balls on amazon for about $4.50 each. i was thinking that we might all chip in a couple bucks and donate some balls to friendly house one week instead of the regular friday cash donation. if you’d be interested in throwing in $2-$3, PM me and i’ll order as many balls as i can get money together for. my goal is 12, six each of 2 different colors, but even a few new ones would help the situation.
I would suggest that everyone buy a ball and bring it each night. If we take the track of supplying them the balls, they will get beat to hell in no time and we will be at square one and buying new balls within a month. I don’t think we are the only ones using those things.
Maybe if we bought them they would store them separately for Tuesday and Friday use only.
Anything would be better than those square balls and the small lead filled ball.
Why not ask them to supply some decent balls? After all, each person does shell $5 their way every Tuesday to play dodgeball.
that was our first approach. 3-4 weeks ago. still not seeing any new balls, which is why i’m suggesting this approach now. i figure it amounts to the same thing monetarily. i usually try to give them $2-$3 when i go in on friday. so, if i just give them a dodgeball every 2 weeks instead, it comes out to be the same for me and better for the people playing dodgeball there, since there’s a constant influx of new balls.
i figured it’d be good to start off with a fresh batch, then trickle some more in over time, but i don’t want to shell out for 1-2 dozen balls on my own, which is why i figured i’d ask if anyone else was interested in helping out.
They are asked every week for new balls and always respond “we are working on it”. It is to the point that they don’t even have enough to play on the two courts at one time. We all know what fun it is to play with 15-16 players on a side. Maybe we should play the entire length of the gym.

i’m down for asking them to store the balls we bring seperately, as i think you’re right that ours get mixed in with the ones they use for the community programs. i don’t want to have to remember to bring a ball every night when i come, though. and i don’t really like the idea that the availability of balls on a particular night is going to be tied to who shows up and remembers to bring one.
Thank god someone’s finally taking the lead on this. The balls at FH are ridiculous. I will totally chip in for this, and I think everyone who likes coming to pickup should too. It’ll make it more fun than throwing greasy-non grip balls, or dangerously heavy ones…

thanks, christian! i’ll get a final count of who is willing to contribute, and how much, by the end of this week and put in an order by monday at the latest.

Thanks Jon!
I almost put my finger through a soft spot in a ball last night! oops. And the heavy ones are ridiculous!
Can’t wait until the new ones arrive and are ready for play!
I would be happy to sponsor a ball for pick-up, however, I thought I would throw out an idea for Colleen. If the league sponsored all the balls at Friendly House pick-up with Recesstime emblazoned balls, it would be almost free advertising for the league. Just a thought! Non-the-less, I would be happy to pay for a ball to donate to pick-up.

We were floating this idea a few weeks ago for recruiting purposes…it would be cool to have half the balls at Friendly House with my team’s name on it. Would be even cooler if more of my team actually practiced!
Please dont buy the same balls that Colleen has purchased. Those things are terrible. The Mikasa brand is much better and will last longer. Heck the ones you get at Fred Meyer last a lot longer and hold their shape. Oh and I will chip in as well.
