Mushball FAQ

What is Mushball?

Mushball is a lot like softball, except the ball is so much softer and larger. There is no need for a glove, you catch it with your hands and because it is so soft, it is difficult to hit very far. Mushball is imported from the Mushball Capital of the World, Chicago.

Who Plays Mushball?
We’re a thriving group of players in Portland, Oregon who love mushball and want to spread the joy of our childhood passion with anyone who wants to share a field. We are of various ages (all over 21), professions, backgrounds and playing ability.

What are your rules?
We use softball rules, sort of. Teams play with 10 defensively and must have at last 4 men/4 women on the field at a time (like kickball). As with kickball, all rostered team members must be in the batting order. The batting order may not have more than two men hitting in a row. For a full list of our rules, click here.

*I THINK I WANT TO HAVE MY OWN TEAM…HOW CAN I DO THIS?*
Go to the registration page and click create a new team. You will create a team code, which you will send to your potential teammates. Your teammates will sign up under your team name and you will be notified. You may also check your roster and players contact information by logging into the registration page to view your team.

If it’s the off-season, please email us and let us know your team name and on a scale of 1-5 how likely this team of yours is to actually take the field come kick-off time. (1 being “just curious” and 5 being we have been shining our Chuck Taylors® since middle-school just waiting for the chance to take the field again!)

I DON’T HAVE A TEAM BUT WANT TO PLAY!
You’re in the right place! Many of our teams are formed completely out of independent registrants. Plus we have teams who usually need another player. You can go ahead and register here or if you want to try to meet people and find a team before you sign up, check out our social networking part of the site here.

*HOW MANY PLAYERS ON A TEAM?*
Typically, teams range in size from about 15 to 22 players. Since teams field 10 players defensively, you will want to make sure that you have substitutes available. If you need help with extra players, we always have free agents looking to join a team! Teams are capped at 18 players. Check out the mushball forum for free agents or teams looking for players.

*CAN I FIELD AN ALL-MALE TEAM?*
Sorry… co-ed or bust! If you check out the rules page you will learn that you must have at least four males and four females in the outfield at all times.

*HOW MUCH TO BE A PART OF THIS?*
League dues cost between $60 and $75 that gets you seven - ten regular season games plus playoffs (everybody makes the playoffs!) a t-shirt and an invitation to the memorable end-of-season party!

*END OF SEASON PARTY?*
Yup… on the last day of the season, we will have our end of season tourney to determine the season champion. That night we pick up the tab for beer and food while you and your teammates celebrate the season, crown the King and Queen and start looking towards the next season.

*HOW DO I REGISTER?*
We only accept registration on line. It’s quick and easy, just like us! Look up on your left where it says registration, click on that. Have team? Need a team? We can accommodate both! You can just set up your own team and give your friends a secret code to register (all that info is on the registration page). If you just want to get on a team, you can register as an individual. In addition, you should advertise a bit about yourself in the mushball forum (Do you like PiƱa Coladas? Do you like getting caught in the rain?) to make sure you get on a team that you like.

*CAN WE BOOZE ON THE FIELDS?*
Yes and no. A lot of our fields are acquired through the Portland Public Schools. Since the kids cannot drink or smoke at school neither can we because: ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO ARE PROHIBITED ON SCHOOL FIELDS.

However, when we secure fields through Portland Parks and Recreation, such as Overlook Park, Alberta Park, Buckman Field and Grant Park; we also purchase alcohol permits. Thus, you can drink beer and wine and cheer for your teammates as they bunt, boot and/or rally around the bases on these fields. But leave the hard stuff and kegs at home please!
